The springs in Magadi’s waters is a very hot place, in places of the lake the water is so hot it can poach an egg!
But this is the unlikely home for the alkaline tilapia or the tilapine Cichline, a spring dwelling fish that feeds of the algae that grows at the bottom of the water.

The algae grows stronger in the volcanic hot parts of the water best, the cichlid dashes into the hot water, grabs a mouthful of algae and swims back again.
There’s always one fish that goes too far for the prized rich algae that grows closer and closer to the source of the heat, and most perish, being cooked alive.
This sadly is a game of daring chicken for most don’t see through.
