Did You Know Ring Tail Cat?
Miners and settlers once kept pet ring tails to keep their cabins free of vermin. A hole was cut in a small box and placed near a wood-burning stove as a dark,
warm place for the ring tail to sleep during the day. The animal would come out at night to prey on mice.

Ring tails mate in the spring. The gestation period is 45-50 days, during which the male will procure food for the female. There will be 2-4 cubs in a litter. The cubs open their eyes after a month, and will hunt for themselves after four months. They reach sexual maturity at ten months. The ring tail’s lifespan in the wild is seven years.
Do you know how many of these there are in California? I’m curious I have never seen one before. I would like to research some information on them. They are beautiful.

Sorry, I did not proof read my comment. A ring-tail cat was climbing on the side of my cabin last night. It was just the cutest little creature and the markings were so distinct.
We had one climb down the inside of our fireplace last night and broke a ceramic figure on a shelf. We were scared to death because all we saw was a black tail run across our kitchen! We live in the mountains of Scottsdale, AZ so having one of these in our house was strange. He ran back up the fireplace and had apparently been coming in and out of our house all weekend because we found a box of chocolates eaten and hidden around our bathroom! He was cute though, but I’m glad he’s gone!!!!!!
Nan you need to put a screen or spark arrest er over the flue on your fire place. That’s a bad area for animals to get trapped and die!
Have there ever been sitings of the ring tailed cat in louisiana?
correction, have they ever been seen in louisiana?
I just returned from a funeral in Louisiana and saw an uncle I hadn’t seen since the ’70’s. Coincidentally, he trapped the first ring tail cat in Louisiana as a teenager. It is on display somewhere in Baton Rouge. His name is Donny Waldron.
Two months ago I moved into a house that has been vacant for most of the year. Something was moving in the crawl spaces of the block walls near the ceiling. They make no sound just jumping around, leaving in a hurry between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. After four exterminator visits no one knows what it is. One thought possibly a ring-tail cat but the space between insulation and roof was not spacious enough. After cutting into the sheet rock in a closet near the highest points of pitch I was able to see that it was possible for them or it to travel the perimeter of the house due to the block wall area of at least six inches and above the vents for heating and cooling there was more than enough room. What ever they are, they are very social because they come to what ever area of the house your in. We thought bats too, but not now. Can you help me? I’ve put a safe trap in the crawl space but they aren’t buying it. Suggestions PLEASE!!!
These darn things are killing my pigeons, I still dont know how he is getting in. Anybody have suggestions
I just saw one today. So cute! I thought it was something escaped from the zoo because it looked so exotic, but one of my neighbors corrected me before I could call animal control. I live in Texas and apparently these guys show up more in the cooler months.
I have a ring tail I have had her since she was about 4 weeks old. Eyes not opened etc… She was knocked out of her nest by dogs and the hunters tried to put her back and mom would not take her. She will be 2 years old in May. She has a huge sunroom no furtinure except a table frig and some shelfs in it but we built network of ceiling walkways and platforms for rose she drinks water, fruit juice, eat high quality cat food and fruits berries and such. She actually hates meat. Weird but true. Rose was hand raised but other then me she will not let anyone hold her and will not come to anyone else. She has bitten to the bone just playing. I love her but would never advice them as pets. they are smart can open purses climb anything etc.. etc… But she is my baby and will always be with me. But she is never caged. Is Spayed and had vaccinations etc… she is healthy and happy. But I wish she would of been able to be released. to Be free but she is sooo afraid of the outside eventhough she has windows all around her room, and windows into the house so she can see me at night when she is awake. I am from California and that is where she came from.
