Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP) Tablets Double Strength (DS) are a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat respiratory, urinary tract, skin or gastrointestinal infections and other conditions. It can also be used to treat certain infections with protozoa. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic that limits the growth of bacteria. Sulfonamides inhibit synthesis of folic acid, important to bacterial DNA synthesis. Trimethoprim works by starving the bacteria of nucleotides necessary for DNA replication.
